How Osteoporosis is diagnosed  ?

  • Typically a woman above 45 years of age or post-menopausal women with diffuse back pain, stooped posture, presenting with loss of height or development of a fracture due to minor trauma.
  • plain X-ray can be done for the primary assessment of osteoporosis and for  confirmation the fracture especially in spine or hip
  • BMD scan are done to assess bone quality with T and Z score
  • MRI and CT scans are performed to rule out or confirm spinal cord and nerve root compression.
  • Level of Vitamin D, Calcium are assessed

What is BMD and T-Score?

BMD is Bone Mineral Density Testing. BMD scan can be use to assess the bone quality. Usually T and Z score are calculated

BMD  scan with DEXA scan is to be done to  detect the amount of bone loss and blood calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D and serum creatinine levels. A DEXA scan takes approximately 30 minutes and is a painless procedure.

Tscore between −1 and −2.5 indicates that you have low bone mass, although not low enough to be diagnosed with osteoporosis. A Tscore of −2.5 or lower indicates that you have osteoporosis. The greater the negative number, the more severe the osteoporosis
